Inventive spelling writing activities

In an article on the Natural Child Projectreading consultant Margaret Phinney compared the process of learning to spell and write to learning to speak. But even these children do not have any special difficulty inventive spelling writing activities adapting to standard spelling.

Inventive Spelling

Using invented spelling is a great way for children to practice which letter-sounds go with which letter! Instead parents encourage early speaking attempts and reinforce correct pronunciations. These children probably also struggle with reading, and they need lots of chances to read and write.

The final stage of invented spelling comes when kids are able to include middle sounds. Our school offers some advice in this area as well.

However, some children's spelling shows aspects of invented spelling for several years.
